Foam carving with SprutCAM X Robot for a Netflix movie

When in 2020 Roar Uthaug, Norwegian director set out to make Troll, the monster movie that he has been pondering for over years, he knew that he needed the movie decorations to be right.

The M3V company from Sweden was hired to create the film props. It specializes in the construction of decoration and set design for television, feature films, commercials, theater etc.

Among many things needed for the set design of this monster film, M3V needed a giant skull, which is featured in one of the most intense scenes in the end of the film. The company turned to Nioform, Sweden which specializes in special manufacturing in design, art and architecture. And that’s where the SprutCAM X Robot CAM system got to play an important part in the creative process.

Joakim, from Nioform took the 3D model of the skull to SprutCAM X, programmed the machining using 3D visual simulation and the rest was the job of the robot who did all the milling out of EPS. All the programming is conveniently done in the off-line mode (OLP) on a PC. The partially hollow model was delivered in parts to M3V Produktion whose decorator laminated acrylic plaster on the outside to give it a realistic appearance.

The movie Troll got 89% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes website, and perhaps there can be a sequel, as the creative team speculates. Well, SprutCAM X Robot is always here to lend a helping (robotic) hand in the creative process.
